Location
This recently built and very well appointed holiday villa is just five minutes drive from the centre of the popular resort of Playa Blanca on the southern coast of Lanzarote. Somewhat smaller and quieter than other resorts on the island, Playa Blanca has grown up around a small fishing harbour and is a great place to spend a peaceful and relaxing holiday. The nearest beach to the villa is Playa Flamingo beach which has white sand and is popular with families and children. You will find a good choice of restaurants and bars in the resort centre and useful shopping facilities for your immediate needs although the variety of shops here is not particularly extensive.
Playa Blanca has three soft sandy beaches with clear water and excellent views across to the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura which is famous for its beautiful expanses of sand and dunes. Ferries operating from the harbour can take you on a day trip to this island as it is just a short boat ride away. Playa Blanca’s seafront promenade is lined with restaurants and bars, with many places offering freshly caught seafood. Evening entertainment is fairly low key and based mainly around the resort’s hotels and restaurants with some live music shows on offer.
A little harder to reach via a dirt track about eight kilometres from Play Blanca, are the wonderful protected beaches of Papagayo which are considered to be some of the best beaches on Lanzarote.
For those looking for something a little different, Timanfaya National Park has an incredible ‘moonscape’ with strange land features formed by past volcanic activity. You can drive here or take a coach, camel or walking tour around the area to learn about the history of the volcanoes. The last eruption on the island took place in 1824 and created vast new craters, whilst entombing whole villages and acres of fertile terrain. At the Islote de Hilario you can see the artificial geysers that spring up from a magma chamber 3km below ground when cold water is poured into a hole and sample food cooked using natural geothermal heat at the El Diablo restaurant. In the north of the island is the Jameos del Agua, an exotic water garden designed by the local artist Cesar Manrique and set in an underground lava tunnel.
If you enjoy playing a round of golf, the island’s only golf course is to be found at Costa Teguise, around 50 minutes away by car. Golf Costa Teguise is an eighteen hole course set at the foot of an extinct volcano overlooking the Atlantic and is surrounded by palms and cactuses.
